Inspired by Thompson's infamous reporting style, which he dubbed "gonzo journalism," the Commandos set out to shake the foundations of traditional warfare. Armed with an arsenal of unorthodox tactics and a disdain for authority, they embarked on a series of daring missions that would leave the world stunned.
Despite its originality, the game’s punishing difficulty created a huge market for its now-famous cheat codes. As one reviewer at the time noted, “the odds are always awful,” and Commandos was a game that would “never prove an easy task”. This challenge, coupled with its innovative design, helped the title sell over 1.2 million units, becoming a surprise blockbuster and a landmark achievement for the nascent Spanish game industry.
